What is Learner driver insurance?

Learner driver insurance is a specific type of temporary car insurance for learner drivers that allows you to get some lesson time in your own car, or in a friend’s or relative’s car. It covers you to drive on a provisional licence in the short term while being properly supervised. It’s a separate policy from the vehicle owner’s so their cover won’t be affected if you need to make a claim.

Perfect for practice

Learner driver insurance is great if you want to practice in a specific model, in a car that you know you’ll be driving once you’ve passed, or if you just want to get in as much driving time as possible before your test.

Flexible driving

Many learners choose to get experience outside their regular lessons with an instructor. So, taking out temporary learner driver insurance is an ideal way to make sure you remain properly covered.

Temporary Insurance

What’s more, Dayinsure offers flexible and cheap temporary learner driver insurance that can cover you from one day right up to five months*, depending on your needs, and can be arranged
in minutes.

Why take out learner driver insurance?

Just like any other driver, as a provisional licence holder in Great Britain you’re legally required to have insurance when you’re driving a car under supervision.

Most registered driving instructors have their own insurance as part of the services they offer, so you should already be covered when taking professional lessons. But if you want to drive outside those lessons, you’ll need a valid policy.

Learner driver insurance is perfect for:

  • When you want to learn to drive in your own car with an instructor, friend or family member
  • When you want private instruction from a friend or family member in their own car.

No Claims Discount

It protects the annual policyholder’s No Claims Discount (NCD) – also called No Claims Bonus

Pay-as-you-go

Pay-as-you-go means you only pay for the cover you need and it’s completely flexible

£250 excess

There’s a low ‘excess’ of only £250 (the ‘excess’ is the first part of any claim you have to pay)

Leading insurer

We offer comprehensive provisional car insurance cover, provided by the UK’s leading insurer, Aviva

Competitive

We offer competitive pricing, lorem ipsum dolor sit amet psum morem baba dolor sit amet

No cancellation fee

What does temporary learner driver insurance cover?

Dayinsure’s learner driver policies cover you, as a provisional licence holder, to drive a vehicle in the UK while supervised by a fully qualified GB licence-holder. The vehicle can be your own, or that of a friend or family member.

Our insurance provides fully comprehensive cover for the period of time you select when you take out your policy. It’s important to know that our policies do not provide cover for driving once you’ve passed your test – in this case you’ll need to have someone with you to drive you home from the test centre.

You’ll also need to make sure that:

  • you’re accompanied by a qualified driver aged between 25 and 75
  • they’ve held a full GB licence for at least 3 years
  • they’re qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in:- for example, they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car.

Learner Driver FAQs

If you’re keen to know more about temporary learner driver insurance, take a look at our FAQs below:

If you want to drive a friend or family member’s car under supervision outside your professional lessons then, by law, you’ll need insurance to cover you on the vehicle you’ll be driving.

Choosing your own temporary learner driver insurance policy means that you’ll benefit from comprehensive cover and that the vehicle-owner’s No Claims Discount won’t be affected if you need to make a claim.

Dual insurance involves one driver having two policies on the same car. These can include the main, annual policy and a named driver policy.

With a Dayinsure learner driver policy, you can choose the length of cover, from just one day up to five months* – giving you plenty of time in which to get in some extra driving practice. Unlike annual policies, our short-term cover provides flexibility to suit your needs.

* One month’s cover is classed as 28 days, so a 5-month policy runs for 140 days in total. Cover from 1 day applies to cars that are already insured with an annual policy, otherwise policies start from 1 month.

Yes! Whether you have your own car or are looking for learner driver insurance for your parent’s car, Dayinsure can help. Our policies provide fully comprehensive cover for your chosen car, whether you’re the registered keeper or making use of a friend’s or family member’s car.

You can get learner insurance on as many cars as you wish but you’d need to take out separate policies for each car that you intend to drive.

Yes, there can be as many learner drivers insured to drive the same car as you like, as long as each learner has their own separate insurance policy.

Learner insurance can be more expensive due to a lack of driving experience. If you’re a young learner driver, you’re also more likely to be classed as a risk. According to Brake, inexperience means less ability to spot hazards and young drivers are more likely to take risks.

Unfortunately, these factors mean insurance for young drivers often costs more. Our flexible policies offer competitive prices but choosing to drive a less expensive model of car could reduce the cost of your cover.

Vehicles come in one of 50 different insurance groups, so it’s worth considering this when deciding what car you want to get driving experience in. For further details of what our learner driver insurance covers, take a look at our product information document

Many learner drivers choose to take their driving test in their instructor’s car but, if you’d rather make use of your own vehicle or take your test in a different one, our policies can provide cover.

Once you’ve been given the good news, your learner insurance is no longer valid so you’ll need to make sure someone else can drive you back from the test centre. You’ll also need to take out another policy that covers you as a fully qualified driver so you can drive your chosen car legally.

While you can’t add a named driver, another driver can take out their own separate temporary learner driver insurance or temporary car insurance policy with us.
It’s important to remember that whoever is supervising you must also be insured to drive the car in which you’re practising.

Whoever is supervising you to drive must meet the following criteria:

aside from this, it doesn’t matter if it’s a friend, parent or other relative, as long as they’re qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in – for example, they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car.

  • be between 25 and 75 years of age
  • have held a full GB driving licence for at least 3 years
  • aside from this, it doesn’t matter if it’s a friend, parent or other relative, as long as they’re qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in – for example, they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car.

Learner drivers can now take driving lessons on motorways in England, Scotland and Wales but they must be:

  • supervised by a qualified driving instructor
  • in a dual-controlled learner driver car
  • if you’re driving a car under the supervision of a friend or family member who is not a professional instructor (and you’re not in a dual control car), you won’t be able to drive on motorways.

Full guidance on the law can be found here and in our guide: ‘Can learners drive on the motorway?

A temporary policy won’t enable you to build up a no claims discount, but most annual learner driver insurance cover will. It’s important to check with the provider.

If you’re at fault in an accident, third-party cover will only cover injury or damage to another driver or their property, not your own.

Dayinsure’s temporary learner driver insurance policies all offer fully comprehensive cover in the UK, so you get total peace of mind while you’re practising. This means you’ll be properly covered if you’re involved in an accident and you’re held responsible.

One of the benefits of Dayinsure’s learner driver insurance is that the owner’s policy and any attached No Claims Discount won’t be affected if you need to make a claim. If you’re learning in a car that’s not your own, the owner can rest assured that their annual policy will remain as is, even in the event of an accident.

This is possible, depending on the insurer’s terms. But, if an accident were to happen and you were responsible, you could be putting their No Claims Discount at risk.

Our temporary learner driver insurance provides a separate policy for the provisional licence holder. So the owner’s own annual car insurance policy won’t be affected even in the event of an accident that’s your fault.

Learner driver insurance rules often differ slightly to other types of policies. With Dayinsure, there are a few factors to be aware of:

  • you must be accompanied by a qualified driver aged between 25 and 75 who has held a full GB driving licence for at least 3 years. They must also be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in.
  • all temporary learner driver insurance stops the moment you pass your driving test. If you take your driving test in the car in which you are insured, you’ll need to make sure you have someone with you to drive you home from the test centre!
