What is temporary car insurance?
Temporary car insurance works like standard comprehensive car insurance. However, unlike regular car insurance, which covers you for a year, temporary insurance lasts for a limited period, giving you short-term cover on a range of vehicles.
It’s a flexible option that allows you to get a policy only for the time you need it for. With temporary car insurance from Dayinsure, you’ll be protected for anything from one hour to 30 days. This means you can take a 60-minute driving test drive or borrow a friend’s car for a few weeks safe in the knowledge that you’re insured.
It’s easy to set up this limited-period cover. Simply follow the steps and we’ll get you covered well within an hour – in certain cases it can take as little as 15 minutes.
What’s included with temporary car insurance?
Temporary car insurance from Dayinsure provides the same comprehensive cover that you get from a standard annual policy. So, whether you need cover for an hour, a day, a week, or a month, you can drive on UK roads safe in the knowledge that you’re fully insured.
Unlike third-party cover, which, in the event of an accident, provides only basic protection against third-party damage and loss, a comprehensive car insurance policy also insures against your own damage. When you take out temporary car insurance with us, you’ll receive fully comprehensive cover against damage to yourself and the car you’re driving, plus compensating the third party involved in the incident.

Additionally, this fully comprehensive cover means:
- You are eligible to make a claim, even if the accident was your fault
- You can make a claim if you have discovered that the car has been damaged but can’t prove who is at fault, for instance if it was parked on the street
- We will pay for the car to be repaired or replace the car if it’s lost or stolen, along with paying the car’s legal owner a cash amount that’s equal to the loss or damage.
If you’re planning to take out cover with us, you’ll see that you are fully protected for the duration of the policy. All policies are underwritten by Aviva, which is our key partner, or other insurers.
Should you have any questions about what fully comprehensive cover includes or the wording of the policy documents, take a look at our help and support pages or get in touch. Our team is on hand and happy to help you.
What can temporary car insurance be used for?
One of the main advantages of temporary car insurance is that it’s a handy option if you unexpectedly need to drive a car or other vehicle you’re not covered to drive. There are several reasons why you might need this short-term protection. Some of the most common include:
Borrowing a car
There can be lots of reasons why you might need to borrow a car. You could be:
- Buying or selling a car and want to arrange a test drive
- Borrowing a friend or family member’s bigger car for a house move, holiday, or overnight stay in another part of the country
- Needing a motor so you can pick up the kids from school while your partner’s car is in the garage.
It’s most likely that you’ll suddenly need to borrow a car and it’s not planned. However, whether it’s an unexpected necessity or you’re planning to borrow your friend’s car for a little while, temporary car insurance will put your mind at ease while you’re behind the wheel.
Adding a temporary additional driver to your car
We can help if:
- Your annual policy doesn’t cover the policyholder to drive other cars
- Your annual policy doesn’t give you comprehensive cover when you drive other cars.
Did you know? It’s a common belief that all annual insurance policies

Making a business trip
Whether you’re driving across town or across the country, you’ll need insurance to cover your journey. We can help if:
- your annual insurance policy doesn’t cover a business trip to a new location.
Did you know? A common misunderstanding is that annual insurance policies that cover commuting allow business trips to any location – they don’t! Commuting use only covers journeys to or from your regular place of work, so this could exclude cover if you visit a client, attend a training course, or help at a local branch. Our temporary car cover insures you for full business use, apart from the carrying of goods or passengers for hire or reward.
24-hour car insurance is for any situation, such as:
- When the annual policyholder gets taken ill and you need to take over the driving
- Needing to share the driving on a long journey
- Taking a SORN vehicle for an MOT (subject to underwriter)
- When you’ll be driving a bigger vehicle to transport a piece of furniture
- Where there’s a short gap between one annual policy finishing and another one starting.
Whatever the reason for needing short-period car insurance, you can get cover quickly with Dayinsure. Simply follow the steps and you’ll be protected in minutes.

Temporary car insurance FAQs
To make it easier for you to find the cover you need, we’ve rounded up some of the most frequent questions about the temporary car insurance we offer at Dayinsure. Take a look at the list below and if you can’t see what you’re looking for or you have further questions, check out the help and support section or get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help.
If you have an accident while covered under our short-term car insurance policy, then this won’t affect the car owner’s No Claims Discount. However, you’ll need to let us know and make sure you declare any incidents to your main insurer.
If you own the car and someone else is driving it, any claims they make while using your vehicle won’t impact your No Claims Discount.
Dual insurance involves one driver having two policies on the same car. These can include the main, annual policy and a named driver policy.
With a Dayinsure learner driver policy, you can choose the length of cover, from just one day up to five months* – giving you plenty of time in which to get in some extra driving practice. Unlike annual policies, our short-term cover provides flexibility to suit your needs.
* One month’s cover is classed as 28 days, so a 5-month policy runs for 140 days in total. Cover from 1 day applies to cars that are already insured with an annual policy, otherwise policies start from 1 month.
Yes! Whether you have your own car or are looking for learner driver insurance for your parent’s car, Dayinsure can help. Our policies provide fully comprehensive cover for your chosen car, whether you’re the registered keeper or making use of a friend’s or family member’s car.
You can get learner insurance on as many cars as you wish but you’d need to take out separate policies for each car that you intend to drive.
Yes, there can be as many learner drivers insured to drive the same car as you like, as long as each learner has their own separate insurance policy.
Learner insurance can be more expensive due to a lack of driving experience. If you’re a young learner driver, you’re also more likely to be classed as a risk. According to Brake, inexperience means less ability to spot hazards and young drivers are more likely to take risks.
Unfortunately, these factors mean insurance for young drivers often costs more. Our flexible policies offer competitive prices but choosing to drive a less expensive model of car could reduce the cost of your cover.
Vehicles come in one of 50 different insurance groups, so it’s worth considering this when deciding what car you want to get driving experience in. For further details of what our learner driver insurance covers, take a look at our product information document
Many learner drivers choose to take their driving test in their instructor’s car but, if you’d rather make use of your own vehicle or take your test in a different one, our policies can provide cover.
Once you’ve been given the good news, your learner insurance is no longer valid so you’ll need to make sure someone else can drive you back from the test centre. You’ll also need to take out another policy that covers you as a fully qualified driver so you can drive your chosen car legally.
While you can’t add a named driver, another driver can take out their own separate temporary learner driver insurance or temporary car insurance policy with us.
It’s important to remember that whoever is supervising you must also be insured to drive the car in which you’re practising.
Whoever is supervising you to drive must meet the following criteria:
aside from this, it doesn’t matter if it’s a friend, parent or other relative, as long as they’re qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in – for example, they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car.
- be between 25 and 75 years of age
- have held a full GB driving licence for at least 3 years
- aside from this, it doesn’t matter if it’s a friend, parent or other relative, as long as they’re qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in – for example, they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car.
Learner drivers can now take driving lessons on motorways in England, Scotland and Wales but they must be:
- supervised by a qualified driving instructor
- in a dual-controlled learner driver car
- if you’re driving a car under the supervision of a friend or family member who is not a professional instructor (and you’re not in a dual control car), you won’t be able to drive on motorways.
Full guidance on the law can be found here and in our guide: ‘Can learners drive on the motorway?’
A temporary policy won’t enable you to build up a no claims discount, but most annual learner driver insurance cover will. It’s important to check with the provider.
If you’re at fault in an accident, third-party cover will only cover injury or damage to another driver or their property, not your own.
Dayinsure’s temporary learner driver insurance policies all offer fully comprehensive cover in the UK, so you get total peace of mind while you’re practising. This means you’ll be properly covered if you’re involved in an accident and you’re held responsible.
One of the benefits of Dayinsure’s learner driver insurance is that the owner’s policy and any attached No Claims Discount won’t be affected if you need to make a claim. If you’re learning in a car that’s not your own, the owner can rest assured that their annual policy will remain as is, even in the event of an accident.
This is possible, depending on the insurer’s terms. But, if an accident were to happen and you were responsible, you could be putting their No Claims Discount at risk.
Our temporary learner driver insurance provides a separate policy for the provisional licence holder. So the owner’s own annual car insurance policy won’t be affected even in the event of an accident that’s your fault.
Learner driver insurance rules often differ slightly to other types of policies. With Dayinsure, there are a few factors to be aware of:
- you must be accompanied by a qualified driver aged between 25 and 75 who has held a full GB driving licence for at least 3 years. They must also be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in.
- all temporary learner driver insurance stops the moment you pass your driving test. If you take your driving test in the car in which you are insured, you’ll need to make sure you have someone with you to drive you home from the test centre!
